Happy birthday to meeeeee (+ exclusive gift for you!)

Hi Reader

Well it's not actually my birthday, but I celebrated the first year of MLC this month (with cake of course!)

It feels strange to write because I've been teaching English for over 10 years for other language schools and companies. One year ago, I went all in with my own business. In the same week, I travelled to Mexico, became a digital nomad and launched Mega Language Coach. Whether you call it bold or a little bit crazy, I knew I was ready for a change.

Since then, I’ve taught through power cuts, homesickness, time zone shifts and cultural adjustments. I’ve received unsolicited advice and criticism, but also kindness and encouragement in the most unexpected places. This journey has made me more resilient and I've learnt that building a business isn’t about fitting in.

It’s lonelier than I expected but also more creative, more freeing and far more meaningful. Mentors, peers and clients have become part of my support system and many of them newsletter readers like you!

Why am I sharing this story with you Reader?

I think it's similar to your language learning journey. There are highs and lows, moments you feel motivated and times you want to give up. If there’s one thing I’ve truly learnt this year, it’s that you don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to ask the right questions, stay open to growth, and be willing to start again as many times as it takes. (Of course, I also know a great language coach to support the learning, when the time feels right!)

Tip of the month

Anyone who has spoken to me knows that I'm a big fan of idioms. This is a short phrase where the meaning isn't always clear, but the phrase is often used by native speakers to share an idea.

This month I'm teaching all my subscribers "learning curve".

A learning curve is the rate at which someone learns something new. It often refers to how difficult or easy a skill is to pick up over time.

Eg) Switching from teaching to running my own business was a steep learning curve, but I learned a lot quickly.

Try and use it when talking about a new skill in your next conversation!

I'm proud to have recently launched my YouTube Channel (subscribe to learn more idioms!)

Guest blog post to encourage more inclusive language teaching

What I recommend:

I finished reading "The 33 Laws of Business and Life" by Steven Bartlett. Simple language makes it accesible for all levels

You will improve your English by practicing regularly and immersing yourself in the language as much as possible. Find a method that suits your schedule and interests, to find the joy in learning.

Coaching corner

A moment for quiet reflection or journalling, even just thinking about your answers can help you notice patterns and shift your focus.

What moment of your lanaguage learning journey are you celebrating this month? Do you find it easy to notice your progress?

Birthday gift

To continue the celebrations for a little longer, I'm offering 10% discount on all courses booked and paid for before the end of August 2025. Simply reply to this email for more details :)

To anyone out there quietly building something of their own: I see you. To those who have supported me, whether through kind words, referrals, advice, or simply engaging with what I share, thank you. It means more than you know.

Here's to year two!

Meg

P.S In my lessons, I create a safe, welcoming space for feedback and suggestions, and I want the same for this newsletter. Let me know what you'd love to see more (or less) of. I’m listening.

Hi Reader Giving feedback might seem simple, but cultural differences can completely change how it's delivered, and received. Let’s compare three common styles: British. Polite and indirect. Criticism is often softened with phrases like “Perhaps you could…” or “It’s not quite there yet.” This is known as using a downgrader, a softening phrase to make feedback sound less harsh. It’s also common to wrap criticism in praise (the classic “feedback sandwich”). American. Confident and clear....

Hi Reader Have you ever felt like no matter how hard you try, your English just doesn’t improve? That could be learned helplessness. This is when past experiences of being corrected, misunderstood, or embarrassed make you believe you’ll never get it right. But that belief isn’t a fact. It’s a pattern you’ve learned, and you can unlearn it. The good news is, you're not failing, you just need another approach! With small actions like recording voice notes, tracking your English time (not your...

Hi Reader I hope you've had a serene September. As my Mexican adventure finishes and I prepare for the next chaper, I want to share some reflections which may be useful in your own journey. "Oh the places you'll go" by Dr Seuss is a book that I loved as a child, even before I could read it myself. (I've heard rumours of a film adaptation coming soon, which will be a great chance to practice English comprehension!) This book taught me that we don't know where we will go in the future, and to...
