Are some people just lucky with languages?

Hi Reader

I'd be rich if I had a euro every time I heard this!
โ€‹
But is it ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜บ luck? ๐Ÿ€
Very few of our skills are natural talents and luck
I think hard work and dedication will get you a lot further
โ€‹
I've spent hours learning German, French and now Spanish
That's ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ
โ€‹
My clients are not ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜บ to succeed in their interviews and presentations
They deserve the rewards for their efforts
โ€‹
We work on the required skills, so they feel prepared and confident

๐—œ๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฒ ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป (but they don't need me to keep my fingers crossed!)
We practise, we refine and we plan
โ€‹
No one is born fluent in any language (ask any parent of a toddler in the babbling stage!)
๐Ÿงฟ Do you think we make our own luck in life?

Tip of the month

Did you know that English has plenty of lucky phrases, Reader? Try them in your next conversation!

  • Hit the jackpot: To have great, often unexpected, success or win something big.
  • Down on your luck: Experiencing a difficult period with a lack of money or work.
  • Luck of the draw: Something determined purely by chance, not skill.
  • Break a leg: Good luck (especially for performers).
  • Fingers crossed: A gesture hoping for good luck.
  • Knock on wood: A superstitious act to prevent bad luck after a lucky statement.

September 2026

What I spoke about:

I shared some of my recent multilingual failures, because these things happen!

What I'm excited about:

You probably don't carry a textbook everywhere, but you do have your phone. The perfect way to practice!

What I recommend:

Word puzzles are a great way to improve vocabulary and spelling. I enjoy this one to keep my brain active (warning, it may become addictive!)

Coaching corner

A moment for quiet reflection or journalling, even just thinking about your answers can help you notice patterns and shift your focus.

How could you be more consistent next month, so you don't need to rely solely on luck?

Meg

P.S In my lessons, I create a safe, welcoming space for feedback and suggestions, and I want the same for this newsletter. Let me know what you'd love to see more (or less) of. Iโ€™m listening.

Hi Reader Summer may be fading away and lots of us think about returning to offices, routines and predictability. However, I want to keep some of the magic of summer and take some spontaneous sunshine into September with me! I think there are always ways to find bubbles of joy and ways to make the mundane a little bit more magical โœจ In language learning it may involve finding a new podcast for your commute, or using some bright coloured highlighters to add interest to those endless grammar...

Hi Reader, My baby is growing up fast (don't panic Mum, not a real human but my business), and turned 2 this month!! It feels like I've been managing MLC forever and also just a few moments, time has a strange way of creeping up on us. From on outside perspective, people often focus on what Iโ€™ve gained from living abroad, learning languages, building my own business, and creating a life where I can work from almost anywhere. The freedom. The travel. The flexibility. And while those things are...

Hi Reader As both a language learner and coach, Iโ€™ve always felt language is about much more than grammar or pronunciation. It shapes how we connect with people, who feels included in conversations, and sometimes who doesnโ€™t. ๐ŸŒˆ Since itโ€™s Pride Month, I wanted to share something that matters to me both personally and professionally. If youโ€™ve looked at my social media profiles before, you might have seen that I describe myself as an Inclusive Language Advocate. For me, that means trying to...
